Motta has European dream
Monday 29 June, 2009

Inter midfielder Thiago Motta dreams of the Champions League and believes his side now have what it takes to win the competition.

The Nerazzurri signed the 26-year-old Brazilian from Genoa earlier this month.

Motta arrived in Italy last summer, having spent his entire career in Spain.

He won the Champions League with Barcelona in 2006 only to be told he was no longer needed.

Some thought he was finished after he left the Blaugrana, but an excellent campaign with Genoa last season has put the doubters to rest.

“It's true, I want to return to win the Champions League. This is the reason I am at Inter and for this reason I found the strength to leave Genoa,” Motta told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“I was really well in Genoa, but I gave myself an objective and I have to try and pursue it.

“I have been honest [with Genoa]. When I went to see President Preziosi I said: 'Give me a chance and you'll see that within a year there will be big teams looking for me.'

“I am happy Inter arrived. The Rossoblu fans shouldn't worry. Genoa will stay great because they have an extraordinary Coach. Gian Piero Gasperini is one of the best in Europe.

“I support them.

“Inter are ready to try and win the Champions League. Barcelona are a step in front of everyone. I know the Catalans. I grew up with a lot of them.

“They have demonstrated that the right way to win is good football. Whoever plays anti-football can only reach intermediate objectives.

“Whoever has quality and balance can arrive wherever.”

On being asked about Jose Mourinho, Motta replied: “My words cannot add anything to the facts. They speak of his achievements with Porto, Chelsea and Inter
