Melo snubs Inter
Thursday 11 June, 2009

Felipe Melo is prepared to stay with Fiorentina and extend his contract amid interest from Italian champions Inter.

The 25-year-old midfielder, who is currently on international duty with Brazil, had been strongly linked with the Nerazzurri.

According to Il Corriere dello Sport, Melo will prolong his current deal, which expires in 2012, and on top of that he will receive better terms.

A salary increase will allow him to earn the same as Fiorentina's top players, namely Alberto Gilardino and Sebastien Frey.

“Felipe will always be grateful to Fiorentina for having given him the chance to consolidate himself in a great football team,” his agent, Umberto Fusco, said.

“Now is the right time to examine his attachment to the Viola cause. The rest is chatter. Aside from the contract there is a desire from both parties that Melo stays in Florence.”

Inter are not the only team to have registered an interest in Melo, who is also being courted by Arsenal and Real Madrid.

Fiorentina only signed him last summer from Almeria and, while he has had some discipline issues, his first season in Italy has been a success.
