Marino building a great Napoli
Wednesday 10 June, 2009

Napoli director of sport Pierpaolo Marino has promised the club's fans he is building a great team ahead of next season.

The Partenopei have already signed Luca Cigarini and Fabio Quagliarella, who could also be joined by Hugo Campagnaro later today.

Marino has been criticised of late, though, especially for his treatment of Ezequiel Lavezzi, Napoli's star player.

The Argentina striker recently wrote an open letter to the club saying Marino had not kept promises that he had made him earlier in the year.

Lavezzi, who has left Italy for the summer, is referring to a new contract that has yet to materialise.

“He now has to enjoy the holidays, which he regularly has in advance. When they finish we'll know more about the situation,” Marino said.

“Napoli have never received requests for Lavezzi through official channels, so certain reports have been framed.

“I once again would like to tell Lavezzi to enjoy his holidays. Meanwhile we have to build something great where he should not feel 11/11ths of the team.

“To those who are looking to put me against Lavezzi, remember that I had the courage to bring him back to Italy after he was rejected by Genoa.

“In the beginning, it was I who always defended him and helped him against general scepticism.

“In January, we clarified the same situation we are going through now when the same fantastical requests were made of me,” he concluded.
