Zanetti calls Frank and Leo
Tuesday 8 July, 2008

Inter captain Javier Zanetti would be happy to see Frank Lampard at San Siro and has called for Barcelona striking star Lionel Messi to join him.

The Italian champions are looking to add some high-profile new recruits to their ranks ahead of next season.

The main target seems to be Chelsea star Lampard, who Zanetti has great respect for.

“I have only played against him for the national side,” the Argentine international told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“He is a true champion. He defends, he attacks - he knows how to read the game and how to shoot. There aren’t many players like him around.”

Although it is highly unlikely, Zanetti is dreaming of being joined in the Beneamata ranks by compatriot Messi.

“I speak to Leo often,” he said. “It would be hard for him to leave Barcelona, but it will be different in the future.

“If he does leave Spain I think he will come to us. Even if there was a lengthy queue, I would expect President Massimo Moratti to be at the front of it.”

After recent links with Juventus, it seems that Dejan Stankovic will be staying put.

“I hope that he stays,” Zanetti said. “If he has to leave, I hope he doesn’t go to Juventus.

“Dejan is so popular at Inter and the fans understand the sacrifices that he has made.”

Zanetti also has high hopes for Brazilian striker Adriano, who has returned after a period on loan at Sao Paulo.

“I hope that the fans understand that Adri will need help at the start,” he stressed. “But then he will have to do the rest.

“I spoke to him in Belo Horizonte and he seemed in a good state. He feels in debt to the club and his teammates.”

The Biscione skipper finally gave a brief response to the arrival of Portuguese Coach Jose Mourinho.

“We will only know how good he is in a year, but he has done well wherever he has been,” Zanetti said.

“He also made a good first impression as he telephoned me immediately after signing.”
