Legro's great expectations
Monday 7 July, 2008

Juventus defender Nicola Legrottaglie expects the Old Lady to excel in next season’s Champions League and doesn’t fear for his place in the side.

The former Chievo stopper enjoyed a renaissance last term and played a pivotal role in the Bianconeri’s third-placed finish.

Now the 31-year-old is confident that his side can continue their success and impress on the European stage.

“I’m happy to stay at Juve and be part of this group,” he said on the Juventus Channel.

“I’m convinced that we will do particularly well in Europe. I can’t explain why, but I have this feeling.

“We just need to keep the same thirst for victory as last year and stay humble.”

Legrottaglie wasn’t expected to be more than a squad player last term, but a serious injury to Portuguese defender Jorge Andrade handed him a chance to shine.

This summer’s addition of Olof Mellberg could reduce Legrottaglie’s playing minutes, but he is ready to fight for a starting shirt.

“A lot of people have called me this summer to tell me that Juve have replaced me,” he said. “I just say that if whoever arrives is stronger than me then there is no problem.

“I’m secure in the knowledge of what I can do. It will be harder this year for me but nobody is guaranteed a place here.

“But then last year I wasn’t supposed to play and I did – in fact I played almost every game. I’ll be very happy if that is true again.”
