Casiraghi bemoans clingy giants
Monday 7 July, 2008

Pierluigi Casiraghi has revealed his frustration after failing to persuade several clubs to release their players for his Olympic squad.

The Under-21 boss has picked his men to take to Beijing and has chosen just one overage player in Lazio’s Tommaso Rocchi.

There had been suggestions in the Press that Casiraghi would call some bigger names for the trip, but it seems that his efforts were in vain.

“Why was Rocchi the only overage player? There were a lot of picket fences,” the former Chelsea player explained.

“We couldn’t pick Juventus players or even Fiorentina’s – except for Riccardo Montolivo – and nobody who had played at Euro 2008.

“Milan didn’t want us to use their men either and Inter hardly have any Italians and those in the first team were out of the question.”

Italy begin their Olympic football campaign against Honduras at the Qinhuangdao Sports Centre on August 7 before taking on Korea on August 10 and Cameroon on August 13.
