Real Madrid President Florentino Perez is determined to revolutionise football and has called for a new European Super League.
The patron has shattered transfer records this summer with £80m for Cristiano Ronaldo and £60m for Kaka, but is resisting UEFA President Michel Platini’s bid for a salary cap.
“What we need to work out with UEFA is a European Super League that guarantees that all the top teams play each other all the time - something that does not happen in the current Champions League.”
It is not the first time this has been proposed, but the timing is intriguing, as Perez and other top clubs resist the clampdown on debt management.
Perez told Spanish television this would not involve “abandoning national leagues,” but rather guarantee the same clubs participation every year.
The change would ensure Milan no longer suffered a financially crippling loss from failing to qualify from the Champions League, as they did last season a blow that forced them to sell Kaka.
It is believed the potential new European Super League could include Real Madrid, Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal, Inter, Milan, Juventus, Bayern Munich, Lyon, Porto, Celtic, Rangers and Olympiakos.
