Spalletti's recipe for Roma
Saturday 4 July, 2009

Luciano Spalletti insists Roma need a new centre-forward and criticised the potential takeover bid that wanted to oust Francesco Totti.

The last two days have been very tense around the Giallorossi camp after a lawyer for consortium chief Vinicio Fioranelli stated Totti was “ruining Roma.”

Fioranelli later blasted his own employee for the comments, but the incident has badly hit public support for their attempts to buy out the club.

“Perhaps if Fioranelli became the President then he’d want to replace the logo with the eagle of Lazio,” sniped Spalletti.

“I won’t say more, but one has to wonder what the rapport between the fans and entertainment really is. When the fans come to the stadium, they want to see a spectacle and Totti provides that.

“I don’t know Fioranelli, but the fans gave an unequivocal response and what his group said about Totti does not bode well.”

It has not been a good year for Roma, who failed to qualify for the Champions League, and their tactician feels he knows the reason why.

“Last season in many games we played well, but were ineffective upfront. This year that cannot happen. Clearly to achieve that we need a striker, someone who can hit the back of the net regularly.

“We are looking for a centre-forward, someone good in the air who can attack the space and complete Totti’s characteristics.”

Spalletti was rumoured to be on his way out during the summer with interest from Juventus, but opted to stay on at the Olimpico.

“I gave consistency to my work with Roma and this should be the signal that silences everyone. I was never called by anybody.

“In one of our meetings I did tell the club that if they wanted to interrupt our rapport then that was fine, but that if it had happened then I probably would’ve taken a year off.”
