Platini calls for a salary cap
Thursday 2 July, 2009

In reaction to Real Madrid's lavish summer spending spree, UEFA President Michel Platini has called for a salary cap to be introduced in three years time.

Real Madrid have spent £181m on four players this summer, which Platini has called abnormal.

He now wants to instil football with a sense of financial fair play, asking clubs to live within their means rather than putting the game at risk by loading themselves with debt.

In an interview with L'Equipe, Platini severely criticised Real Madrid President Florentino Perez and his Galacticos policy.

“It's something abnormal that bothers me. Personally, I don't understand how they can spend £80m for a player.

“Do the club who make these signings really have the money to do it? The acquisition of Cristiano Ronaldo poses questions, but if Real have the banks' guarantees.

“In any case, already in 1984 the transfer of Diego Maradona from Barcelona to Napoli was considered indecent.

“We will do something. We are working. But it will take a little time, perhaps two or three years. I want to establish the rules,” he concluded.

La Gazzetta dello Sport understands Platini will discuss the matter in greater deal at two meetings in Nyon on July 14 and 15.

In August he will sound out his proposals with the European Club Association and FifPro, a worldwide representative organisation for footballers.
