Monday 28 July, 2008 | | Cagliari triumphed 3-0 over Sardinian neighbours Olbia in an entertaining friendly yesterday evening.
The Rossoblu had begun life under Massimiliano Allegri positively with heavy wins over amateur sides, but they faced their first proper test against Serie C2 outfit Olbia.
It took Cagliari 22 minutes to take the lead. The man to deliver the advantage was Andrea Cossu who unleashed a powerful strike from just inside the box.
It was 2-0 just five minutes later when impressive young gun Daniele Ragatzu embarked on an enterprising run, which he capped with an impudent finish past the onrushing Luca Righi.
The hosts went close through Spartaco Memè whose powerful blast cannoned off Francesco Pisano, but Cagliari were chasing down every ball and dominating the clash.
After 33 minutes, Argentine hitman Joaquin Larrivey continued his reassuring pre-season when he converted a Davide Biondini cross for 3-0.
Only a superb save from Righi prevented the margin from widening when Paolo Bianco deflected Cossus drive.
Larrivey looked menacing when he brought down a Biondini cross, but Mauro Gilardi was alert to cut out the danger.
A raft of substitutions at half-time robbed the game of its momentum and little of note happened in the second period.
Diego Lopez made an excellent tackle to deny Olbia a consolation through Riccardo Cazzola and Andrea Lazzari and Michele Fini fired wide as the game fizzled out.
