Frank Lampard may never wear an Inter shirt as reports suggest he is close to signing a contract extension with Chelsea.
The England international has been the Nerazzurris primary target this summer as they look to strengthen their midfield.
Jose Mourinho had hoped to bring Lampard to San Siro after the former West Ham man refused to extend his deal at Stamford Bridge, which expires next summer.
But after the Blues rebuffed Inters advances, Mourinho insisted he was certain Lampard would arrive next summer as a free agent.
However, the Daily Express has reported that Lampard is close to agreeing a new deal with Chelsea to tie him to the club until 2013.
The record-breaking contract would be worth around £8m per season and would end any chance of Lampard playing for Inter.
The Beneamata are widely expected to turn to Portsmouths Ghanaian international Sulley Muntari as an alternative.
