Jose discusses first impressions
Wednesday 16 July, 2008

Jose Mourinho has given an insight into what happened at his first training session as Inter Coach.

The Portuguese tactician replaced Roberto Mancini at the helm this summer and is aiming to go one better than his predecessor and conquer Europe.

Inter met up at 8am this morning to begin their preparations for the 2008-09 campaign and Mourinho got to see his men in action for the first time.

“At first I don’t say much but I watched them,” the former Chelsea boss told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“Then we all talked for 25 minutes and I saw that they were attentive and concentrated, which gave me a good impression.

“I discussed my tactical ideas and the rules for training – the code that we all have to abide by.

“I won’t ask them to do anything I don’t - if I get there an hour and a half before training every day then I can’t accept it if one of them is late.

“Fines are a joke for players who earn millions. I am just asking for respect and anyone who doesn’t obey the rules will be sent home and will sit in the stands.

“It can be very easy or very hard to work with me. I say things face-to-face and everyone has to have the same passion as me.

“My philosophy in life is the same as my philosophy in training – I never want to lose the honesty, ambition and character.”

Mourinho may be forgiven for thinking about the unresolved Frank Lampard transfer saga that continues to occupy the Press.

“He is a Chelsea player and I don’t want to show a lack of respect to other clubs, but everyone knows the relationship between Frank and myself,” Mourinho explained.

“I need another midfielder and I told the players that today. I would like a player who is different to those I already have in the squad.”

As for strikers, Mourinho isn’t lacking options and admits that it could be hard to shuffle his pack.

“We have six strikers, which is a lot,” he said. “It’s true that it could be hard to keep them all happy.

“But none of them are weak links and it will just be a matter of three playing and two on the bench.

“Zlatan Ibrahimovic will be ready for the first day of the season. Adriano is happy and he wants to work. His first words have been positive, but we will have to see.”
