Nesta rules out Italy return
Wednesday 16 July, 2008

Veteran Milan defender Alessandro Nesta has insisted that he won't return to the Azzurri side under Marcello Lippi.

With the return of Lippi to the Italy bench, there have been suggestions that Francesco Totti and Nesta could retract their international retirement.

Nesta hasn’t represented his country since October 2006 when he played in a Euro 2008 qualifier against Georgia and he claims that he won’t be tempted back to the fold.

“The national team is a closed chapter,” Nesta stated emphatically.

“Leaving the Azzurri had nothing to do with Roberto Donadoni, I had major physical problems that stopped me from playing.”

The former Lazio man also commented on Milan’s summer transfer campaign.

“The club has done well in the market,” he said. “And this year we can challenge for the Scudetto as well as the UEFA Cup, which seems to be less difficult than the Champions League on paper.

“As we don’t have the Champions League as an objective, we can focus on domestic affairs because we haven’t done so well in Serie A for a few years.”
