Sheva "happy to join Samp"
Sunday 13 July, 2008

Sampdoria have confirmed Andriy Shevchenko is “happy to join us” and the only sticking point is his wages.

For some weeks there have been rumours that the Blucerchiati are in talks to take the striker on loan from Chelsea.

“We have a way to resolve our problems upfront with a figure able to stir up the crowd as well as put the ball in the back of the net,” said general manager Beppe Marotta.

“Sheva would be happy to join us, but there are problems around his wages. Many top class players like Sampdoria and a deal is entirely plausible, so never say never.”

Shevchenko has been linked with a return to Milan on loan from Chelsea, but Samp have shown themselves to be canny on the transfer market.

They took Antonio Cassano from Real Madrid in a similar deal last year and rehabilitated the player to the degree that he earned a place at Euro 2008.

“Last season Cassano and Vincenzo Montella arrived when the pre-season training was already underway, so by the end of July I think we'll have completed our squad,” continued Marotta in the Secolo XIX newspaper.

Other options for the Marassi club are Inter's Hernan Crespo and Fiorentina striker Giampaolo Pazzini.

“Let's just say they are in the same situation as Sheva. The Cassano move is a difficult thing to replicate, but never say never.”
