Patrick Vieira has urged Frank Lampard to hurry his move to Inter, but Chelsea are determined to stall it until 2009.
According to the News of the World, the Stamford Bridge side is willing to hold Lampard to his contract even if that means losing him on a free transfer next summer.
It would allow him to sign a four-year deal with the Nerazzurri in January 2009, but still delay the move in order to spite Jose Mourinho.
Former Arsenal midfielder Vieira has joined the chorus of players urging Lamps to take the leap towards Serie A.
"It will be a big challenge for him but at the same time it will be a fantastic one," he told the Sunday Mirror.
"Would he be welcome at Inter? He is a fantastic player and you want to play with players of that class. It will be one more good player.
"I don't know what is happening with Frank but I do know that the change in lifestyle would not be a problem. Frank would adjust to that.
"A good player can play in any league in the world - and he is a good player. I do not believe that will be a problem. When you are an international like him to get used to it very quickly.
"He can enjoy himself at Inter, I really believe that. Inter is a club that is going up as a football club. Now we want the Champions League. The club have the ambition and the motivation to do that.
"If Frank comes here then we will be stronger. The better players you have then the better chance you have."
Vieira knows the feeling of making that move, as he joined Juventus in 2005 and then transferred to Inter in the wake of the Calciopoli scandal.
Now he has the opportunity to work with Mourinho after a fractious rapport with former Coach Roberto Mancini and a series of injury problems.
"I spoke with the players I know at Chelsea about him and all those players love him," continued the Frenchman in the Sunday Mirror.
"There must be a reason for that. I talked to him and he was really relaxed. He was cool and he was joking. He was sounding like people were saying he was.
Now the aim is to win the league title in Italy, which we have done for the last two years, and the Champions League is a big target for us. I certainly want to play for the club. I am happy there and I am fit."
Some players have found the pressure in Italian football to be unbearable, but Vieira is confident Lampard can deal with it.
"You have to live with the pressures outside the stadium. But I don't think that will be a problem for Frank. Yes, the fans sometimes come to training but you just have to get used to it."
