The former Milan star was assistant manager to Carlo Ancelotti last season and passed his certificate at Coverciano this month allowing him to be a fully-fledged tactician.

“I am sorry, because Pisa would be the ideal city and club to begin my adventure as a Coach. I was really looking for a side like Pisa to start out with,” said the ex-defender.

“My wife and my son come first right now, above anything else. I will not Coach any side this season, as I will instead study so that I can improve further.”

Costacurta had already warned that he would need a job close to his home in Milan if he were to take up football management this term, as his wife Martina Colombari is in a touring theatrical production for six months starting in the autumn.

“I don’t want our son Achille to grow up with a nanny. I want to be there for him,” he said of the four-year-old.

New Pisa patron Luca Pomponi took charge of the club on Friday and immediately made a beeline for Costacurta.

“I liked Pomponi straight away, as he was enthusiastic and had clear ideas. I don’t know if this will be enough to succeed at Pisa, but he wanted to build on the progress made by the last owners who went so close to Serie A.”

The Tuscan outfit lost the chance to reach the top flight with a defeat in the Serie B promotion play-offs.
