Fiorentina request minute's silence
Friday 9 January, 2009

Fiorentina have decided there will be a minute’s silence ahead of Sunday’s game with Lecce after a tragedy hit the city of Florence.

The club asked and received permission to hold the moment of remembrance for 16-year-old friends Francesca and Margaux, who were killed in a car accident this week.

Taken as a symbol of the hundreds of teens killed on the roads in Italy every year, they were in a car driving home from a party when it crashed into a tree on the outskirts of Florence.

Driver Gianmarco and 19-year-old Mario are in critical condition, but charges of multiple manslaughter are ready to be brought after it was revealed the driver was over the alcohol limit and had been smoking marijuana.

The Mayor of Florence, Leonardo Domenici, has called a day of mourning for the first time in 10 years, as their funerals will be held on Saturday morning.

“The accident is a tragedy for the parents, relatives and friends of the victims as well as a tough blow to the soul of the entire city,” wrote Domenici in an open letter.

“On Saturday there will be a moment of reflection and the chance to think about how we can work together to avoid more of these absurd deaths and to create a collective conscience defending the lives of our boys and girls.”

As well as Fiorentina’s match, there will be a minute’s silence at 10.30am on Saturday throughout Florence.

Shops, bars and restaurants will come to a halt for 10 minutes at 1am on Saturday night, marking the time of the accident.

There will be a minute’s silence ahead of Saturday’s performance of the ballet Giselle.
