Tonight’s Serie B match between Sassuolo and Brescia has been called off due to a frozen pitch, delaying the start of Italian football’s 2009.
This game for Serie B Week 20 was set to be the first official encounter of the New Year in the peninsula, but will not take place as planned.
The Stadio Braglia in Modena which plays host to Sassuolo’s home games has been hit hard by the recent bad weather.
A pitch inspection found the field was frozen solid and unable to guarantee the safety of the players.
In accordance with the two squads, the referee announced the postponement and it is possible the game will be played on Sunday afternoon, if conditions improve.
Another pitch inspection has been scheduled for midday local time tomorrow.
