Rumours of Juan Sebastian Veron’s return to Lazio have been shot down by President Claudio Lotito. “I don’t like comebacks.”
The reports gained momentum over the Christmas break that Veron, who had the best years of his career at the Olimpico, was looking for one last hurrah with the club.
“I don’t want to act as an apologist for all the criticism aimed at my administration, but it seems that lately many players are saying they’d like to return,” smiled Lotito on Radio Kiss Kiss.
“Maybe they understood that they made a mistake in walking away in moments of difficulty.”
Veron was sold to Manchester United for £28m in 2001 and went on to play for Chelsea, Inter and current club Estudiantes.
The Biancocelesti later went to the brink of bankruptcy, but were rescued by Lotito’s drastic and in some cases unpopular financial overhaul in 2004.
“We have far too many players for the competitions we are involved in,” continued the President.
“In order to look after the treasure chest of the squad, we will loan several out to other clubs.
“I can declare our transfer window activity will be principally getting the best out of those talents who until this time have not had much room and wish to play elsewhere.
“I can assure that Stefano Mauri will remain with us, as I confirm we have not received any offer from Juventus.”
However, the likes of Simone Inzaghi, Stephen Makinwa and Christian Manfredini are expected to move on.
