Napoli’s 2009 got off to a dismal start with a friendly defeat at Cavese, while Catania knocked six past Marsala.
The first test matches of the new year got underway this afternoon as teams return to training after the Christmas break.
Napoli were clearly still feeling the after-effects of the festivities as they fell 2-1 against local side Cavese.
The minnows actually went 2-0 up after 49 minutes thanks to a Favasuli penalty and Tarantino angled drive.
German Denis came closest to scoring when his lob was cleared off the line, while Christian Maggio and Luigi Vitale tested the goalkeeper before Andrea Russotto tapped in a Mariano Bogliacino cross.
Catania had no such problems and thumped local side Marsala 6-0 thanks to Japanese hitman Taka Morimoto’s brace.
Morimoto had ended his 2008 by scoring two against Roma and seems to be in splendid form. Jorge Martinez also got a couple of goals along with Giuseppe Mascara and Michele Paolucci.
