Juventus bid £20m for Jermain?
Sunday 4 January, 2009

Juventus have reportedly tabled a £20m bid for Jermain Defoe after the striker demanded a move away from Portsmouth.

The England international is eager to quit Fratton Park in order to reunite with boss Harry Redknapp at Tottenham.

However, Pompey are increasingly irritated at the situation – having already lost their manager to Spurs mid-season – and could steer him towards an overseas switch.

The suggestion that Juve have made an offer £4m higher than that of Spurs will further increase the chances of a Serie A move, claims the Sunday Mirror.

Defoe could well welcome a departure from England after receiving telephone death threats from disgruntled Portsmouth fans.

“I have absolutely no idea how they got hold of my number but some of the calls have made me feel sick to my stomach.”

It remains to be seen why Juventus would be willing to splash out such a large sum for a player who would be cup-tied after his UEFA Cup experience.

It is also important to note that the Bianconeri’s injury crisis is dissipating with news that David Trezeguet is almost ready for his comeback four months after knee surgery.
