Tardelli tips Italians v Brits
Saturday 31 January, 2009

Republic of Ireland assistant manager Marco Tardelli believes all three Italians will progress in the Champions League and gives his Scudetto predictions.

It’s all Italy v England in the knockouts with Arsenal-Roma, Juventus-Chelsea and Manchester United-Inter.

“I often watch Arsenal and they are the most entertaining side, almost unique in England, but they also let opponents play and run many risks,” Giovanni Trapattoni’s right hand man told the Gazzetta dello Sport.

“In the first leg of Manchester United’s tie, they will be missing Nemanja Vidic, who is crucial. Wayne Rooney has only just returned. They play well, but Inter’s attack can put them under pressure.

“As for the Chelsea game, I say Juve are tactically more balanced. I think all three Italian clubs will go through.”

The former Italy Under-21 and Inter boss (as well as Juventus player) is keeping a close eye on the Serie A situation after the Nerazzurri went three points clear.

“I never doubted Inter would break away. The others cannot win the title, only Inter can lose it,” Tardelli continued.

“Juve are the real rivals, more so than Milan. I am convinced by almost everything: the psychology, character, desire to get back on track and how they are accustomed to success.

“The squad is not on the same level of Inter, but then again nobody is, even in Europe. Plus Inter’s decisive players are the right age, whereas Juve’s top stars are over 30.

“David Trezeguet and Mauro Camoranesi are often injured, Pavel Nedved is no longer the player he was, while Ale Del Piero makes up for it with his quality.”

Tardelli has experienced the locker room atmosphere at both clubs and notices a definite difference.

“Inter have a very difficult atmosphere. There are great players, but a few mistakes by [Jose] Mourinho and he is lambasted, even if he doesn’t do anything to warrant it. Let’s just say Juve are better able to control themselves.”

One of the problems at the Nerazzurri camp has been Mario Balotelli, who was frozen out for disciplinary reasons and reportedly burst into tears during Friday’s training session.

“Mourinho has done well to use a firm hand, as these rebellions are ridiculous,” concluded Tardelli.

“I understand he is a great player, but he risks becoming like his illustrious predecessors. Mido did the same thing when I was in charge of Egypt and I kicked him out.”

Vidic banned for Inter opener
As expected, Nemanja Vidic has been suspended for the Champions League encounter with Inter after his Club World Cup dismissal. More
