It is reported that David Beckham has been left off Milan’s UEFA Cup list, though Gennaro Gattuso hopes he will stay.
The player joined on loan from LA Galaxy until March 9, but this week the Rossoneri confirmed they were eager to buy him outright or extend the spell until the end of the season.
Their hopes have taken a blow with suggestions in the Gazzetta dello Sport that Beckham is not on the UEFA Cup list to be handed in this weekend.
By leaving him off that squad, he will be unable to participate in the competition this term, even if he eventually remains at San Siro.
It also rules Beckham out of the second round tie with Werder Bremen, as he would have been otherwise available on February 18 and 26.
“He never pulls out of a challenge, scores goals and works for the team,” said an admiring Gattuso.
“I think this makes him a great player and we hope he stays after March 9. He is giving us a real helping hand, it’s no joke.
“We need him to achieve important objectives. We all hope that he stays with Milan.”
Galaxy Coach Bruce Arena has been increasingly irritated at the speculation surrounding the England star’s future.
"No-one ever knows with exact certainty what will happen, everything becomes distorted, but we are not interested in other news," he told Sportmediaset.
"David will return to us on March 9. There is an agreement for a loan with Milan and the player, the club and his agent as well as Galaxy and the MLS know the details."
