Jose shown second red
Monday 26 January, 2009

Milan Coach Carlo Ancelotti has insisted that Jose Mourinho deserved to be sent to the stands during Inter’s game with Sampdoria last night.

Mourinho received a red card five minutes before half-time as he repeatedly leapt off his bench and accused the referee of being scared to make gutsy decisions.

“In my opinion [referee Domenico] Celi wasn’t afraid and Mourinho showed a lack of respect,” said Ancelotti whose Milan side are six points behind Inter in Serie A.

“For this reason, it was right that he was sent off. We have to avoid adding pressure. All too often we don’t help referees from the bench.”

Returning to a more positive subject, Ancelotti spoke of his happiness at completing his 400th game on Milan’s bench with a 4-1 victory at Bologna on Sunday afternoon.

“I am not the Italian Alex Ferguson,” joked Ancelotti. “You need coaching staff and players to make a club function well.

“As well as knowing football tactically, you now have to be a little psychological as well, what with large squads.

“Yesterday was a very beautiful day for me, 400 games at one club is really something. And despite the time past the rapport between the club and I is still good, there is harmony.”

Ancelotti was also pleased for Kaka who scored twice in his first game for Milan since turning down a multi million pound offer from Manchester City.

“The fact that Ricardo has decided to stay here is an ulterior motive for everyone. The affection that all the Milan public showed him has given him a lot more enthusiasm.

“In those hours, I held two positions,” revealed Ancelotti. “One of aligning myself with the decisions of the club and another of following the player on an emotional level.”

Ancelotti then turned to Ronaldinho who was benched for the second game in a row on Sunday after performing poorly in training and to allow Kaka to play in his preferred position.

“In time, Kaka’s position on the pitch changed,” said Ancelotti. “He arrived in Milan as a pure trequartista and then we moved him behind the two strikers and he was fine there.

“Then, in accordance with the needs of the team, his position became more advanced. He is now used to that role and prefers to play as a second attacker.

“As the start of this season he wasn’t able to play there because Ronaldinho was there. To avoid working Ronaldinho in the defensive phase I moved him more forward,” Ancelotti revealed.

“Sooner or later, we will see Ronaldinho repositioned behind Kaka. He can be a weapon against any team that defends a lot.

“But Kaka hasn’t asked for any tactical privileges to stay at Milan,” insisted Ancelotti. “To play more forward takes away the need to think from a defensive point of view. His move is above all for this reason.”
