Buffon hails ‘leaders’ Juventus
Monday 26 January, 2009

Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon is proud of his side after they moved to the top of Serie A – albeit only for a few hours over the weekend.

The Bianconeri beat Fiorentina 1-0 in Turin on Saturday night thanks to a great Claudio Marchisio goal and some dubious officiating to overtake leaders Inter and claim pole position.

The Nerazzurri have since regained first place after their 1-0 victory against Sampdoria last night. They are now three points ahead of Juventus.

“To be at the top even if only for one day gratifies us for all the efforts made in this period,” said Buffon. “And it is a spark that helps us not give up.”

Juventus were lucky to come away with three points against Fiorentina as the Viola had a penalty denied, a goal disallowed and hit the woodwork.

“Suffered victories like those against the Viola toughen you,” explained Buffon. “They make your self esteem grow. We will go forward like this.”

The 30-year-old World Cup winner has been in and out of the Juventus side of late because of a persistent thigh problem.

“During the period in which I was stopped by injury, I said that my re-entry would be fixed only when I felt back on top, and so our position is thanks to those who have defended well in my place.”

The Bianconeri continue their pursuit of Inter away at struggling Udinese on Wednesday before hosting Cagliari in a week’s time.
