Moratti repels Mourinho 'attacks'
Sunday 25 January, 2009

President Massimo Moratti defends Jose Mourinho and Inter against the “indecent” criticism from the media.

The newspapers have been full of speculation over what is causing the Nerazzurri's 'crisis' after picking up one point from their last two Serie A games against Cagliari and Atalanta.

“I am not worried,” assured President Moratti. “I consider the 3-1 defeat in Bergamo as a missed match in the fixture list, as I don't think we really stepped on to the field at all.

“Are there problems in the locker room? I do not need to reassure anyone, as our fans are mature enough to understand there is the right climate between the squad, the Coach and the directors, so there is nothing alarming about it.

“Despite the fact he is getting results in every competition, Mourinho has been subjected to attacks that verge on the indecent from some newspapers and those with 'nostalgia' for previous campaigns.

“He is not accustomed to life at Inter and this sort of attack, but if we talk about pressure then I doubt he feels any from Juventus for first place.”

There were reports after the Atalanta loss that Mourinho had blasted his team, stating they had not really deserved any of their three consecutive Scudetti.

The Coach has denied the story - which was later retracted - and is taking legal action against the newspapers who originally published it.

“He turned to his lawyers to make it clear that he never said those things. This is his way of clarifying matters.

“The fact he won't comment on them merely shows he does not want to be distracted from his work on the field. It is part of his character to react that way and I accept it.”

Inter were also at the centre of controversy this week after an offside goal allowed them to knock Roma out of the Coppa Italia quarter-final.

“I heard the reaction from President Rosella Sensi, but I found it strange, because the directors said nothing of the kind when we met after the game. Perhaps she watched the game on television and was given another impression of what happened.”

Inter take on Sampdoria this evening without the suspended Zlatan Ibrahimovic, but Mourinho has also dropped Mario Balotelli, Luis Jimenez and Nicolas Burdisso.

“Mourinho can do whatever he considers to be right. He will clarify the reasons and I let him do his work, as I have faith in him and the players.”
