Edy Reja is determined to recapture fourth place for Napoli by seeing off Roma in what he calls “a Champions League clash.”
Both sides are targeting a top four finish this season and go head-to-head at the San Paolo on Sunday afternoon.
“It is a very important game for everyone and, if we look at the table, it can be considered a Champions League clash,” said the Coach.
“It isn’t often we get it wrong at the San Paolo. I am sure the affection and positive vibes from the fans can give us a huge hand. Roma are in great shape, but we are ready for them.”
German Denis will be dropped in favour of Marcelo Zalayeta after the Argentine reacted angrily to his substitution last week.
Roma were the last side to win in this stadium, 2-0 on March 9 2008, after which Napoli have won 16 and drawn two official games on home turf.
To add to Reja’s worries, Francesco Totti has completed a record recovery from a thigh strain to return a month early. “He could’ve waited a week!” joked the Coach.
“Totti is a player of great charisma and quality, so naturally we will have to be careful. Roma are probably at the top of their form right now. We are in good shape too and must maintain the tempo and intensity.”
Napoli’s ambitions will depend greatly on their results this week, as first they will face Roma and then Fiorentina on Wednesday night.
“It will be the opportunity to measure up against our aspirations. We have always put in strong performances against the big clubs, sometimes even exhilarating ones.
“This is a young side that can grow through these tests and understand its own capabilities. But for now, we’ll just focus on Roma…”
