Roma: Coppa exit 'down to ref'
Thursday 22 January, 2009

Roma were furious with the referee after their controversial Coppa Italia defeat last night. “Inter do not need to win this way.”

The Nerazzurri emerged 2-1 winners thanks to a Zlatan Ibrahimovic goal which was created by Walter Samuel in an offside position, while Roma also felt they deserved a penalty.

“We played well,” said Luciano Spalletti. “I don't want to stir up controversy, but it is difficult to comment on a game like that, one where the defeat does not depend on us.

“You should see how much losing matches at this level irritates the players, teams of real talent, when they know full well it wasn't in their hands.”

Spalletti has always tried to calm talk of refereeing errors, but did not disguise his disgust with the officials after the Coppa Italia quarter-final exit.

“We are pleased to receive the compliments from the fans and media, but did not get what Inter did. They are a strong side, but Roma were up to the task and eliminated from the Coppa Italia through no fault of our own.”

President Rosella Sensi was also furious with the referee after Mirko Vucinic's penalty appeals were rejected.

“I am bitter about the obvious refereeing errors. Inter do not need to win this way.”
