Doni hails brilliant Atalanta
Monday 19 January, 2009

Atalanta midfielder Cristiano Doni has praised his teammates after they pulled off the shock of the season, beating Inter 3-1 in Bergamo.

The Orobici won the game in the first 33 minutes, scoring three times. Sergio Floccari broke the deadlock before Doni scored a header and free-kick.

“We played the perfect game, especially in the first half,” said Doni. “It really could not have gone better against a great team.

“When we got back into the dressing room after the final whistle we really could not believe what we had done.”

Doni was honest enough to admit, though, that Atalanta were helped in their victory by some rather fortuitous circumstances, but insisted the Orobici deserved their win.

“We had a little bit of luck, above all on my free-kick,” said Doni. “Against Milan and Juventus, though, we weren’t at all fortunate.”

Doni, who turns 36 in April, was critical of Inter and believes they approached the game in the wrong way, underestimating Atalanta.

“Inter did not play the first part of the game as they should have,” explained Doni. “They had to work very hard against us. We were more clinical and exploited every one of our chances.”

Looking ahead, Doni warned against complacency, reminding his teammates that one win does not make a season.

“We have to have the same concentration, the same attention to detail away from home. We have performed well at home and won a lot of points, but we have to improve away.”

Atalanta are 10th in Serie A at the season’s half way point and travel to Tuscany next weekend where they will face Siena.
