Lippi: Totti return up to me
Wednesday 14 January, 2009

Italy Coach Marcello Lippi has discussed Francesco Totti's international future and the Scudetto race.

Totti retired from Azzurri duty shortly after the 2006 World Cup, but he has hinted that he would return to the fold if Lippi asked him.

“Totti's availability to return to La Nazionale is a sign of good faith, but I will decide about that,” Lippi said.

“Because I have shown respect to him in the past he will show me respect in the future.”

Lippi then gave his view of the title race with Juventus just four points behind leaders Inter after last weekend.

“Inter are the strongest side and the holders - they have a better unit but if they want to win the title they will have to battle to the end,” Lippi claimed.

“This is a passionate championship and I think Juventus are the most impressive because it was predictable that Inter would be at the top.

“Juventus are having a great season and did very well in the Champions League with their two victories against Real Madrid.

“Milan are putting things in place and getting their players back from injury, but they need to get back in the Champions League first and foremost.

“Aside from Inter, Milan and Juventus, I think it will be a tight battle between Fiorentina, Napoli and Genoa for the fourth Champions League qualification spot.”

Italy take on Brazil in a prestigious friendly at the Emirates Stadium next month.

“So far I have never played Brazil as a player or as a Coach and it is a fascinating challenge,” Lippi enthused.

“Given that we are in the Confederations Cup, we could now meet them three times.”
