Capocannoniere Diego Milito won’t play against Torino today, but Genoa boss Gian Piero Gasperini insists the injury isn’t serious.
The Argentine has been the undoubted star of his side after joining from Real Zaragoza in the summer, scoring 12 goals, but has struggled with a groin injury since before Christmas.
“I think it is pointless to risk it,” said Gasperini when asked to explain why Milito was not in the squad for the home game with Torino.
“I do in any case believe that he will be back earlier than expected. In the meantime we have Ruben Olivera, who has always done well whenever he has stepped on to the field.
“He is a basically shy player, but he has character and if he gains the right confidence and reaches his maturity can become a very useful figure in our team.”
Genoa open 2009 in Serie A with their kick-off at 17.00 UK time and hope to maintain their momentum.
“We worked very well over the past 10 days and are facing a team whose position in the table does not reflect their true quality.
“Torino have many talented players, especially in attack, and were constructed for more ambitious targets.”
