International friendly - 5/9/01
Italy 1-0 Morocco

Tommasi 18

Stadio Garilli, Piacenza (20,000)

Giovanni Trapattoni took advantage of this international friendly with Morocco in order to try out an experimental side. The goalless draw in Lithuania highlighted the need for new alternatives, especially in midfield and defence, while Parma’s Marco Di Vaio, Brescia’s 20-year-old defender Daniele Bonera and Luciano Zauri earned their first caps. It was also an emotional day for Filippo Inzaghi, playing in front of his home crowd.

The new faces injected a new enthusiasm into the squad but it was two more experienced players – Damiano Tommasi and Gianluca Zambrotta – who combined for Tommasi's winning goal. The Roma midfielder started and finished the move with a fine run out of midfield.

Di Vaio almost grabbed a stunning goal on his debut, but the fierce volley went inches wide of the near post. However, Morocco had the best chances, especially after the break, with the rapid Bassir, plus Midlanders duo Hadji and Chippo particularly impressive.

Neither goalkeeper was really tested and the game fizzled out considerably in the second half save for some fast-paced Moroccan counter-attacks. Substitute Alessio Tacchinardi was perhaps the only player to put some passion into the second half, but the Juventus midfielder over did it as he was sent off for a clear body-check on an opponent.

There was bad news from Budapest as Romania beat Hungary 2-0, meaning that Italy must beat the Hungarians on October 6 if they are to be certain of topping World Cup qualifying Group 8, although a draw could still see them through as the Azzurri have a stronger goal difference. The tie saw the debut of Gheorghe Hagi on the Romania bench and they will take on Georgia on October 6.
