Gussoni: Jose's out of line
Monday 9 February, 2009

The President of the Italian Referees Association, Cesare Gussoni, believes Jose Mourinho was wrong when he said some decisions made against Inter were 'strange'.

Speaking after Inter's 3-0 win at Lecce on Saturday night, Mourinho revealed he has been concerned in recent weeks about the state of officiating in Italy.

“All of this is strange and what is even stranger is that throughout the week nobody in the media talked about this incident,” Mourinho moaned.

However, Gussoni insists that Mourinho's conspiracy theories are unfounded and he should have every confidence in Italy's refereeing class.

“Mourinho has his own view of the Italian championship and I let him have it with pleasure,” Gussoni told Radio Anch'io Sport.

“It is not up to me to judge him. It will be someone else who does it. However, I insist that the referees are improving after the great crisis of Calciopoli.”

Gussoni did accept that several referees had a bad weekend, but called for more people to follow Claudio Ranieri's example of not apportioning blame.

“It seems to me that everyone's a little upset,” Gussoni admitted. “It's not the first time Ranieri has asked his colleagues not to blame the referees.

“Ranieri has always held up this concept, referring to his great international experience, which has matured considerably over the years.”

Despite Mourinho's protestations, Inter remain seven points clear at the top of Serie A going into the Derby della Madonnina this weekend.
