Fergie: Ref was superb
Wednesday 25 February, 2009

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has laughed off Jose Mourinho's views on referee Luis Medina Cantalejo.

The Portuguese tactician felt the official in last night's Champions League last 16 first leg was too soft on Manchester United.

But Scottish mastermind Ferguson saw things differently and praised the man in the middle at San Siro.

“Is Mourinho serious? I saw a marvellous refereeing performance,” the Manchester United tactician said.

“Cantalejo wasn't intimidated and for me he is a top-class referee.

“There's some disappointment that we didn't win the game because we could have secured a better result, but it's all to play for in the second leg. We are tough to beat at home.

“Wayne Rooney wasn't in shape because he has played just once in the last few weeks.

“We needed to have lots of strength in the box and we prepared for the game with Ryan Giggs in that position and Dimitar Berbatov, who was fantastic in a deep role.”
