Gian Piero Gasperini notes the three points earned in Naples are “crucial” for Genoa’s Champions League ambitions.
The Rossoblu were in fourth place for a few minutes after their 1-0 victory at the San Paolo, but were bumped back when Fiorentina defeated Chievo 2-1 in stoppages.
“We were coming off two games in which we had managed just one point, results that did not reflect what we truly deserved,” said Gasperini.
“Today we reacted the right way. At this moment the team is very united, wants to make its mark and play for the win against all comers.
“These three points are crucial for us. We knew Napoli would have a strong start, so initially we waited for them a little bit, then as the match went on we took control.”
The Grifone appear to be no flash in the pan, so Gasperini is open to dreaming about lofty targets.
“Fourth place is a wonderful thing. Fiorentina and Roma are within a point of us, both sides who can notch together a string of victories.
“There is a long way to go yet and there are teams split between Serie A and Europe who could have a dip in form.
“I think it is too early to sum up our season. We just have to continue getting good results, especially on our travels.”
