Juventus may have blocked his Brazil debut, but Amauri finally admits his decision. “I want to play for the Selecao.”
The striker has been hovering between Italy and his homeland for an international career and the saga seemed to be over when Carlos Dunga called him in as a replacement for the injured Luis Fabiano last night.
However, it was past the FIFA deadline and Juve have confirmed they will not release the player for the February 10 friendly against Italy.
“My dream is to play for the Selecao,” he told Brazilian website Uol Esporte. “But I have to respect Juventus’ decision.”
Bianconeri President Giovanni Cobolli Gigli announced on Saturday night that the club had told Amauri he would not be released, but the striker hints the matter is still up in the air.
“On Monday we will have a meeting in which we will decide what to do.”
Amauri will soon receive Italian citizenship and would be available for selection by Marcello Lippi.
It remains to be seen whether he would accept that call or wait for his turn in the Brazil jersey. Once he has had one cap for a team, he is permanently tied to that nation.
