Mazzarri upset after defeat
Thursday 19 February, 2009

Sampdoria Coach Walter Mazzarri is angry with his team after they lost 1-0 at home to Metalist Kharkiv in the UEFA Cup Third Round last night.

The Blucerchiati were never in the game and went behind in first half injury time when Denys Oliynyk’s header beat Luca Castellazzi.

“It was all rather stop-start,” Mazzarri explained. “We were really naïve to give them a goal in the way we did.

“They were very good and we understood that last night, but I already knew,” he added, before giving an assessment of Sampdoria’s chances in next week’s second leg.

“We will attempt everything we can,” Mazzarri insisted. “We’ll go to Ukraine and try and do something very difficult.”

Sampdoria will have to score in the Ukraine if they are to cancel out the away goal Metalist scored last night.

The Ukrainians are the surprise package of this year’s UEFA Cup. They were undefeated in Group B and beat Benfica and Galatasaray on the road earlier this season.
