Torino goalkeeper Matteo Sereni has asked for the respect of Granata supporters after he decided to stay at the club despite being regularly insulted.
The former Ipswich No.1 had a torrid start to the season and lost his place to Alex Calderoni, but is now back in the side and in impressive form.
The ugliest moment in my career was when I unjustly received insults from a small section of the fans, Sereni explained.
They were insults that wounded me as a man. If I were a mercenary player I would have asked the club to cancel my contract and left.
Instead I stayed and transformed those insults into a competitive anger, he added, no doubt referring to his recent performances that have coincided with Torino going on a four match unbeaten run.
The work with Gandini [Torino's goalkeeper Coach] has got me back to full fitness. I feel good, train in a certain way and have been able to get back to my best.
Sereni, who yesterday celebrated his 34th birthday, then dodged questions about the state of the Torino dressing room, which is reported to have split.
You would have to ask the parties concerned, Sereni insisted. I am convinced that we always need to respect roles and people. Footballers have to understand that well, otherwise they should get another job
Torino currently lie third from bottom in Serie A and are back in action this weekend when they travel to Lazio.
