Champions League, Gp F Matchday 6 - 12/12/07 (19.45)
Roma 1 - 1 Man Utd
Pique' 34 (M), Mancini 71 (R)
Stadio Olimpico

Amantino Mancini earned a 1-1 draw with Manchester United, but Roma hit the woodwork twice and wasted countless chances to win. This means United do not manage to win all six group games.

Both sides were already qualified for the knockouts, so the second-string line-ups consisted mainly of youngsters and more experienced players looking for match fitness after long injury lay-offs. There was tension at the Olimpico before kick-off with scuffles that saw four United fans stabbed and another three English supporters arrested.

Francesco Totti put the ball in the back of the net after 10 minutes, but the goal did not count as the linesman had raised his flag for an offside position. Rodrigo Taddei attempted an audacious volley from Matteo Ferrari's ball over the top, then Kuszczak had to flap an Antunes cross-shot on to the roof of the net.

After a shaky start, the home side took control and Kuszczak got down well to smother a David Pizarro snapshot. However, some soft defending allowed Wayne Rooney to chip the ball for John O'Shea's header fingertipped over by Alexander Doni.

Mauro Esposito turned a Cicinho cross wide of the far post with a free header, as the diminuitive Roma player got between two central defenders from six yards.

However, it was United who took the lead from a set-piece. Gerard Pique' got on the end of a Nani corner kick and achieved what Esposito had failed to do moments earlier, making the most of a free header after Mancini's error. This put Manchester on track to win all six of their group games.

Roma wasted three chances to equalise in the space of 10 seconds. First Totti gathered Cicinho's through ball and hesitated, it fell to Mancini who hit the woodwork and then Esposito nodded over an open goal from six yards! The former Cagliari man claimed he had been shoved in the back, but the referee waved play on.

Antunes set up Mancini for a powerful strike that stung the palms of Kuszczak.

After the restart Daniele De Rossi replaced Taddei and Wes Brown took over from O'Shea, who seemed to have a thigh problem. United again threatened to score from a corner kick, Doni eventually prodding it over the bar after the ball ricocheted around.

At the other end a corner came out to Ahmed Barusso and the former Rimini midfielder's screamer swept inches past the base of the upright. Moments later he made way for Ludovic Giuly and Esposito - jeered by the fans after his misses - was replaced by Mirko Vucinic.

With his first touch of the game, Giuly's cracking volley was charged down from a deflected free kick. United went straight down to the other end on the counter and Chris Eagles volleyed wide.

Michael Carrick drilled past the upright from distance, then Doni had to rush out to close down Saha from Rooney's smart pass.

Roma managed to draw level with a spectacular effort from Mancini - his first in the Champions League this season. Vucinic rolled across for him on the edge of the box and the Brazilian cut back past Brown to curl a precise right-foot finish into the far corner.

The substitutions made a huge difference and moments later Vucinic cracked a low drive against the base of the upright.

Totti's searching pass from midfield was slapped off Vucinic's head by a chaotic Kuszczak intervention that saw him clatter into his teammate. Vucinic hit a piledriver wide from distance, followed by Giuly doing the same.

Roma were now dominating and Kuszczak spilled an Antunes shot set up by Vucinic, then captured a scuffed De Rossi attempt from close range. United's only opportunity in the final 10 minutes was Nani firing straight at Doni.

Vucinic wasted a glorious chance at the 90th, pouncing on a lucky ricochet to volley over from seven yards, when he perhaps should have rolled across to Giuly.
