Bergamo hails captain Doni
Friday 5 December, 2008

Inspirational Atalanta captain Cristiano Doni has been awarded the freedom of Bergamo.

In a ceremony in the northern city, Doni was rewarded for his services to football in the region with honorary citizenship.

The Roman forward is in his second highly productive spell with the Orobici and has scored 80 goals in 201 outings for the club.

Doni has now become the first footballer to be awarded the honour in Bergamo.

“Cristiano is a talisman for Atalanta and I see this prize as a recognition for the player and the team as a whole,” city mayor Roberto Bruni stated.

The No 72 is the top Serie A scorer in the history of Atalanta and can extend his record as he is still a regular starter at the age of 35.
