Moratti shuns Prem duo
Thursday 4 December, 2008

Inter chief Massimo Moratti has silenced reports that he wants to sign Cristiano Ronaldo from Manchester United and Chelsea's Didier Drogba.

The Italian champions have been linked with the two Premiership stars, as well as numerous other big name players, but the oil baron has rubbished the rumours.

“June is some way off for now,” noted Moratti. “These reports are just journalistic inventions.

“We have that many players at a good level that I'm not even thinking about looking for any new ones.”

A swoop for Ronaldo would undoubtedly be popular amongst fans after he was named as the 2008 Golden Ball winner, but Moratti has played down that accolade.

“That award now just goes to a player who does well in the Champions League,” added the Nerazzurri owner. “However, I have to admit that he deserves the honour.

“Italy's lack of representation in the Golden Ball list? It means nothing, it could all change next year.”

Jose Mourinho recently suggested that Serie A wasn't sexy enough when compared to other Leagues in the world, but Moratti has defended the Italian style.

“The Italian Championship still has appeal, even if the type of game which is played here does penalise us,” he added.

“Our stadiums also play a factor. A new one for Inter? A project is being born…”

Inter have won the last three Scudetti and Moratti is confident that their winning ways will continue despite his risky decision in axing Roberto Mancini during the summer.

“He did well with us and won three titles here,” said Moratti. “Mourinho found himself in a difficult situation because he came in for a winning boss and had to demonstrate that he was better.

“But he has settled in well and is showing that he has a certain talent which leads us to hope that the season can finish well.”
