Palermo could turn to Inter's forgotten man Hernan Crespo should they fail to snap up Nilmar in January.
The Sicilians have been chasing Internacional striker Nilmar for months and saw a summer swoop fall through at the 11th hour.
Maurizio Zamparini is still in the box seat to secure the talented 24-year-old, but Genoa and Roma are also said to be lurking.
And Palermo may instead opt to loan proven Argentine hitman Crespo from Inter.
Crespo has slipped out of first-team contention at Inter and is almost certain to leave before the end of the season.
The ex-Chelsea man had been strongly linked with Real Madrid as a temporary replacement for Ruud Van Nistelrooy.
However, latest Press reports insist that the Merengues have completed a deal for Dutch star Klaas-Jan Huntelaar instead, leaving Crespo's future unclear.
Sampdoria and Palermo both made tentative inquiries in the summer but were told that Crespo wanted to play for a bigger side - he is unlikely to be so picky come January.
