Dunga ready to select Amauri
Wednesday 24 December, 2008

There is new uncertainty over the international future of Amauri after Brazil boss Carlos Dunga admitted that he may call him up.

It was looking increasingly likely that the Juventus man would play for Italy in 2009 after failing to win Dunga’s recognition in the past.

However, the Selecao boss is ready to include the former Palermo hitman – but only on the condition that the player doesn’t ask for any guarantees.

“[Inter ‘keeper] Julio Cesar called me to suggest that I pick the Juventus striker,” Dunga told La Gazzetta dello Sport. “You can trust Julio, but…

“I’m ready to select him so long as he doesn’t expect or demand a starting shirt. His agent needs to stop saying that he’ll only play for Brazil if he is guaranteed a place in the XI.

“A player’s representative can’t make such demands. People who know me are aware that such statements drive me mad.”

Amauri, who should gain Italian citizenship in the New Year, has been superb for Juventus and has already bagged 11 League goals so far this term.

“Not even Pele expected a place in the side. Yes, Pele,” continued Dunga. “There are precise rules in my national set-up. Amauri would do well to ask Kaka and Ronaldinho about them.

“I pick the players and I decide who plays. Kaka and Ronaldinho have accepted the rules.”

Italy and Brazil will meet in a February friendly at Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium. It’s still unclear at this stage for which team Amauri will feature – if any.
