Cesare Prandelli hailed his Fiorentina side for breaking a 20-year drought in Genoa and climbing into the top three.
The 1-0 victory away to Sampdoria was their first in Serie A since April 1989, followed by 10 defeats and five draws.
“I am truly happy with this result, because we were without a victory at Marassi for 20 years. Playing in arenas like this is always difficult, but it was an entertaining game in which Sampdoria also put in a good performance.
“Both sides went out on to the field in order to create goal-scoring opportunities.”
The Viola wasted several chances to extend their lead, while Samp thought they had equalised when Sebastien Frey flapped Gennaro Delvecchio’s header off the line, perhaps after it had crossed over.
“Felipe Melo did extremely well, was very organised in midfield and took control. [Goalscorer Riccardo] Montolivo also performed to a high standard, but in general the whole team was in sync.”
