Marek Hamsik has thanked Napoli fans after a Facebook page of apology was set up following his terrifying carjacking.
The midfielder was robbed at gunpoint as he sat in his car in the Fuorigrotta area of the city, near the Stadio San Paolo.
He had his passport, credit cards, house keys, cash and a Rolex watch stolen in the attack, but has not lost his sense of humour.
“Can anyone tell me the time?” he joked when fans asked if he was alright following a training session.
There were fears the experience would prompt the midfielder to seek a move elsewhere and a Facebook group called ‘Those who would like to apologise to Hamsik for the shameful robbery’ gathered more than 1,500 members in 24 hours.
“Don’t worry, I am not leaving Napoli,” smiled the Slovak international who has been a transfer target for Chelsea, Real Madrid, Inter and Juventus.
President Aurelio De Laurentiis rushed to reassure Hamsik in the immediate aftermath of the incident.
“These things can happen to anyone in all the big cities. Naples is one of them, but that’s not all this place represents. Try to relax and forget about this quickly.”
Hamsik won’t be playing in the final game of 2008 away to Torino because of injury, while teammate Ezequiel Lavezzi is suspended.
