| UEFA: Stern tests for Milan and Viola |
Friday 19 December, 2008 |
|
Milan and Fiorentina have tough draws in the UEFA Cup last 32 as they face Werder Bremen and Ajax respectively, but Sampdoria and Udinese were luckier.
The Rossoneri were still smarting from conceding an equaliser to draw 2-2 with Wolfsburg on Wednesday night, leaving them to qualify as runners-up in Group E.
And the slip-up may prove costly for the Diavolo as they now face Champions League third-placed side Werder Bremen, who overcame Milan's city rivals Inter in their final group game.
Fiorentina were eliminated from the Champions League, but managed to secure third place.
After reaching the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup last year, the Tuscans will be confident of success, but they have a tough task as they must play Ajax.
Having squeezed through the group stage with a heroic 1-0 win over Sevilla, Sampdoria were handed a favourable tie on paper as they face Ukrainians Metalist.
However, Metalist were the surprise package of the group stage, winning Group B, which contained Benfica, Hertha Berlin and Galatasaray.
Udinese, who won Group D, were also given an Eastern European test as they were paired with Polish side Lech Poznan.
