Walter's Toro turning point
Wednesday 17 December, 2008

Walter Novellino hopes the Coppa triumph can boost Torino's confidence in Serie A too, while Cesare Prandelli bemoans a costly distraction.

“Defeating Fiorentina gives us courage for the future,” said Novellino after a 1-0 win at the Stadio Franchi. They go through to the quarter-finals, where they'll face Lazio.

“It is an important match for us, as we were coming off a disappointing period. We have to take the strength from this win to go forward, even if we still need to work hard.”

It is particularly confidence-boosting, as Novellino was brought in when a 4-1 home defeat to Fiorentina prompted Gianni De Biasi's dismissal 10 days ago.

“The Viola did not hold back against us, it's just that Toro gave something extra. Now we need to lift our heads in Serie A, too. Truth be told, the next game against Napoli is the one we really have to win.”

It was an upset to see Fiorentina knocked out at the first hurdle, as the big clubs only enter the Coppa Italia at this stage.

“We made one mistake,” said Prandelli of Rolando Bianchi's decisive goal after 18 minutes.

“There was no space to play in. If you are slow, then it becomes easy for your opponents to close you down.

“We tried to push forward, but what we really lacked today was movement off the ball.”
