Lippi hails Capello credentials
Friday 14 December, 2007

World Cup winning Coach Marcello Lippi applauds the decision to appoint Fabio Capello as England manager, but Raymond Domenech doesn’t agree.

Lippi had been in the frame for the post, but he was always an unlikely candidate given his reluctance to work outside of the peninsula.

Capello could be officially announced as the new England Coach within the next few hours and Lippi thinks the FA have made the right decision.

“Capello is the best choice for England,” he stated. “For ability and experience he is the best man for the job.

“You only have to see what he has won in his career to understand that it’s a role that suits him down to the ground.”

However, there are some dissenting voices across Europe and ever controversial France Coach Raymond Domenech would have preferred to see an Englishman get the nod.

“The FA’s choice to appoint Capello is a serious statement,” the former Monaco man told RTL.

“I think that the fact they have to look abroad for a Coach, as they did with Sven Goran Eriksson, isn’t a positive sign.

“England need a boss with the same mentality as the players.

“I hold Capello in high regard and I’m not saying these things because he is Italian.

“I’m saying it for the good of English Coaches who must be offended by the choice of a foreigner.”
