Lippi keeps Totti waiting
Saturday 13 December, 2008

Francesco Totti has left the door open for a return to the Nazionale, but Marcello Lippi won’t reveal if this means a recall for 2010.

The Roma captain took a leave of absence from the Azzurri for a year after winning the 2006 World Cup, citing the need to improve his fitness levels following ankle surgery.

Under pressure from Coach Roberto Donadoni to make a decision either way, Totti did officially hang up his Italy shirt.

However, yesterday he confirmed he was considering a comeback now that Lippi has returned to the bench.

“I read what Francesco said and I thank him,” commented Lippi in the Corriere dello Sport.

“Francesco is really a good lad, quite aside from his obvious talent as a player. I have a special report with him, as with all the boys who won with me in Berlin.

Now that Totti has opened the door to participation in the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, does this mean Lippi will call him?

“I am happy that he is in good shape now, as at the time not everybody understood his decision, which forced him to make choices due to his physical problems.

“As for the future, however, I will say nothing for now. This is not the time to discuss it.”
