Alberto Gilardino believes Fiorentina have what it takes to win the UEFA Cup after reaching the semi-final last season.
“Serie A will be a long battle and it won’t be easy, as there are teams who reinforced considerably this season,” said the striker.
“I think we can go for it in the UEFA Cup and have the right mentality. Last season my teammates went so close to the Final and I can sense there are still regrets about that.”
Milan might have regrets, as Gila’s goal to beat Steaua Bucharest 1-0 was his fifth in the Champions League this term.
“I don’t think about Milan and have no intention of doing so. I am happy with what I am achieving here and tonight we again proved Fiorentina are a good side who won in a difficult arena.
“We are also particularly happy to have finally won a Champions League game as well as qualifying for the UEFA Cup.”
He scored with another of his trademark headers and Gilardino is becoming something of an expert on this type of finish.
“I do try to peel away from the marker before the ball is struck. I had done the same against Lyon on [Mario Alberto] Santana’s cross.
“Tonight I wanted to go towards the near post, but the defender got in front of me, so I changed my approach.
“Obviously you have to be smart in the penalty area to find some space.”
